Terming the problems faced by Kashmiri women same as that of North East States, All India Mahila Congress Committee President Anita Verma Friday said she would apprise Congress President Sonia Gandhi about the issues Kashmiri women are facing. She also said that Sonia was keen to see Kashmiri women enjoying the benefits of various schemes launched at the national level.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Verma, who is one of the close confidants of UPA chairperson, said she has been in the Congress party for a long time. “I started my political career from the youth wing of the Congress,” she said. About the Kashmiri women, she said culture was the main difference between “women here and rest of India.” “As far as the sufferings and other relations that women are confronted with, I think there is big difference. There is a common perception among the women across India that males have occupied their space,” she said.
Verma, during her recent visit to Kashmir, addressed an impressive women rally at Congress headquarters here. The huge participation of women in the rally took her by a surprise. “I was not expecting such a big crowd. I was really happy to see a good number of women in the party fold,” she said. “There was an impression that due to militancy and violence, women in Kashmir prefer to stay away from politics. But the way women joined Congress rally, it was really appreciable.
Verma said during her interaction with various women delegations, she came to know the issues like half-widows, orphan girls, and the women whose dear ones are missing. “I will brief Soniaji about these issues. We would like to see why they haven’t been rehabilitated so far,” she said.
The AIMC President said the issues faced by the Kashmiri women were more or less same as that of women living in others states of India like North East. “If we talk about Chattisgrah only, dozens of women have been raped and many have suffered on other fronts,” she said. She said women wing of the Congress would remain in touch with the Srinagar headquarters to rope in as many as women possible. She said women have been trouble in Kashmir due to violence of more than two decades. “They need a healing touch. They need to be given all benefits of national schemes,” she said. Verma said J&K women needs to be given 33 per cent reservation quota. “We would like to see more women in State Assembly representing Congress,” Verma said. “We want Kashmiri women to stand on their own feet. For that, there is a need to train them under various skill development programs. There are departments like Social welfare and Horticulture. It is the duty of the government’s duty to aware women to avail benefits of all schemes.” She said J&K Mahila Congress Vice-President, Shameema Raina has been assigned the task to strengthen the party.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Raina, a resident of old city, said she joined politics in late 80’s. “I found Congress a party that stands for communal harmony and secularism. I have worked day-in and-out despite strife over the past 22 years.  I have persuaded dozens of women in Srinagar and elsewhere to join Congress,” she said.
Raina said her meeting with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was a turning point for her. “I thought only Congress party can give justice to women of Kashmir. Congress is a secular party and upholds the rights of people belonging to every religion,” said Raina, who is the young women face of Congress in Kashmir.
She said Mahila Congress is active in all three regions of J&K. “I despite belonging to a family in old city received support from my parents. It would not have been possible without the support of my parents. My husband also supported me in joining the politics,” she said. Raina is working hard to improve her performance so that she could be nominated in the State Assembly.
“I would like to be a MLC in the State Assembly. Within a few years time, I would like to be a cabinet minister as Congress doesn’t have any women representative in the Cabinet,” she said.   “I believe Kashmiri women have broken the shackles and decided to take active part in politics. We won’t allow males to dominate us anymore.”
